Last year, Rodel America launched Rodel California, a new state-based fellowship designed to convene emerging local and state leaders for a year-long leadership development program. Over three seminars, this bipartisan cohort engaged with foundational texts on democracy, identity, and polarization, exploring what it means to lead in a complex and divided world.
In January, 21 leaders gathered for their final seminar, supported by outside moderators and Rodel alumni. During the weekend, conversations unfolded that were reflective, at times challenging, and often unfinished in a hopeful way. Fellows listened carefully, pushed back when it mattered, and stayed in dialogue even when topics were uncomfortable. Not every moment was easy. Some discussions were tense, and others were quiet. But the group remained engaged, willing to sit with tough issues.
What became clear—especially by this third seminar—was how much this cohort had covered together. Over the past year, these leaders built real relationships, and by the final weekend, there was a noticeable ease in the room. Fellows spoke more freely, referenced earlier conversations, and showed up for one another with a sense of familiarity and care that Rodel develops over time.
The final seminar ended with fellows feeling reflective and re-energized. What began months ago with curiosity and hesitation concluded with a shared sense of momentum and a genuine desire to stay connected. Participants left with fresh questions, new perspectives, and a network of peers who understand the realities of the leadership challenges ahead. The relationships formed over the past year are not finished products; they are a foundation that can continue to evolve as these leaders move forward.
About Rodel America
Rodel America is a state-level leadership development program inspired by the Rodel Fellowship, which was founded in 2005. As part of the Rodel Institute network, it convenes a bipartisan cohort of emerging local and state leaders for a year-long experience centered on rigorous intellectual engagement and relationship-building.
Through a series of seminars, fellows gather to discuss foundational texts on democracy, leadership, identity, and polarization, creating space for thoughtful dialogue across differences. The program is grounded in shared values: a commitment to democratic principles, mutual respect, and the belief that trust is built, not assumed.
By bringing together leaders within a given state, Rodel America continues to build relationships that strengthen civic life and public service—one conversation at a time.
